Gout

Gout is a metabolic disorder that causes inflammation in or around joints. It is one of the most prevalent forms of inflammatory arthritis in the industrialised world.1 The inflammation is triggered by deposits of uric acid crystals.

Uric acid is the end product of purine degradation. Purines are compounds found in important building blocks in the body and are also ingested with various foods such as red meat, sausage products or beer. The uric acid is then excreted by the kidneys. Under certain circumstances, however, uric acid crystals may form if a critical amount of uric acid is present in the body. These are then deposited in the joints and can subsequently lead to inflammation and pain. Impaired kidney function or a disorder of purine metabolism can cause high levels of uric acid to build up.

Gout may occur in acute attacks known as “flares”. Symptoms include redness, swelling and pain associated with these symptoms.  It is therefore advisable to reduce high uric acid levels since chronic gout may be associated with recurring flares and/or painful arthritis. Tophi, a late stage of chronic gout, can lead to deformation of the joints.

Gout can be treated by a change in lifestyle, including a low-purine diet, and lowering the uric acid levels with drug treatment.
