Flatulence

Flatulence

Flatulence – it’s an unpleasant subject, but one that’s part of life from time to time. In addition to occasional embarrassing situations in everyday life, however, flatulence can cause severe abdominal cramps and pain in those affected.

Flatulence is caused by excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract. Small amounts of air enter the stomach every time you swallow. If this air enters the gut it meets gases that are produced during the digestive process. Up to a certain level, the gases produced enter the blood and are then exhaled by the lungs. But if the level of gas exceeds a certain amount the gases, which are present as bubbles, combine to produce a foam. This increases the pressure on the gut, and may cause bloating and flatulence. Flatulence can be caused by various foods as well as food allergies and intolerances, disorders of the pancreas or other conditions. It can also occur as a side-effect of taking medication. Generally flatulence can be alleviated using various household remedies such as applying heat and massaging the stomach and avoiding certain foods. Anti-foaming agents are another option. They can alleviate acute symptoms by breaking down the foam and thus stopping the flatulence. If flatulence occurs very frequently or in conjunction with other gastrointestinal complaints, it may be useful to consult a doctor.
